In honor of Texas A&M’s dramatic win last night over Notre Dame in “the House that Knute Rockne built,” here’s a Texas photo of Rockne and Austin College Kangaroo Coach Pete Cawthon.
Cawthon’s Roos defeated Baylor in 1924. But every other Southwest Conference school failed to do so. The Bears rolled to a SWC title with wins that included a defeat of Texas A&M on the same field where the Roos had triumphed.
Rockne’s Irish enjoyed a fantastic 1924 season too, winning the national championship on the back of the legendary “four horsemen.” Notre Dame kicked off their 1925 season at home against Baylor.
Rockne held a coaching clinic in Texas before the season began, and tracked down his friend Cawthon with a question. How did Austin College bear Baylor? The answer must have worked, as Notre Dame beat the Bears just two weeks after this photo.
This photo was taken in September 1925. 100 years ago this month.
Well done Aggies. However, you had the “luck of the Irish” that Pete Cawthon is no longer around to help out Notre Dame against a Texas college in “the House that Knute Rockne built.”
