Untold Stories: TCU

“Untold Stories” are the Roo Tales yet to be written for a second book, after the first book is finished and published.

Here’s one:

Head to the TCU campus in Fort Worth, and you’ll soon find yourself at Amon Carter Stadium. Sammy Baugh and Davey O’Brien played there in the 1930s. So did the Roos.

Walk around the mezzanine, and you’ll see a list of all TCU conference championships from 1920 to 2014. It’s that first one I’m interested in.

In 1920, TCU competed in the TIAA.
So did Austin College.

In 1920, TCU had a heck of a team.
So did Austin College.

In 1920, TCU ran the table against conference opponents.
So did Austin College.

The two schools met to decide the title. The game ended in confusion & controversy. Later, an eligibility dispute and subsequent TIAA ruling led to even more confusion & controversy.

So much controvery that:

In 1920, TCU declared themselves conference champions.
So did Austin College.

Hey Horned Frogs. That’s OUR 1920 title. And an “untold story” for another day.
