Crimson & Gold Challenge: #1 of 5

So, here’s the deal. This week is the AC Crimson & Gold Challenge to benefit Roo athletics. To help out the cause, I’m giving away five signed, early copies of my new Roo Tales book, “the Rivals & Legends of Austin College.” If you want to win a copy, all you have to do are three things:

(1) Like or comment on one of my five AC Crimson & Gold Challenge posts this week.
(2) Give to the AC Crimson & Gold Challenge. See giving link in the comments.
(3) Hope that JR Ohr draws your name out of a hat of Roos who completed the two tasks above.

I’ll be writing about five “legends” in the book over five days this week, in order to encourage you to give and win a copy of the book. Today’s legend is Jay Evans.

Jay Evans turns 80 tomorrow. My 1992 classmate Jenny Thompson and Jay’s classmate Becky Sykes recently encouraged us all to send surprise birthday cards to Jay & John Evans; most of those cards have either started to arrive or will soon. Jenny & Becky’s effort in July could not have been timed better. That same week, I had already decided to dedicate my book “Rivals & Legends of Austin College” to Jay Evans.

Like many of you, Jay had a huge impact on me. He got me to AC in the 1980s while I was still in high school. He was a sponsor of and frequent presence within my AC fraternity Rho Lambda Theta. And he has been in close contact with many of us ol’ Rho Lambs in the decades since. Dedicating the book to Jay is more than just personal; Jay Evans is an AC legend if there ever was one, playing a big role in the lives of many Roos both before me and after.

I sent the first print of the book to Jay, alongside a note thanking him for all of his work for AC these past 60+ years. The dedication includes a photo of Jay from the 1980s lecturing high school students about the value of an Austin College education. I’m pleased to report that Jay’s copy of his book arrived over the weekend. Jay gave me a call expressing his gratitude; imagine how that gratitude will grow over this week as all of your birthday cards start flowing in.

Like or comment on this post and give to the AC Crimson & Gold Challenge to have a chance at winning a signed, early copy of “Rivals & Legends.” You can then read my dedication to former Director of Admissions & Distinguished Alumnus Mr. Jay Evans, an AC legend if there ever was one. Happy Birthday Jay.
