AC Kangaroo James Kowalewski (Coach Kovo) runs an excellent podcast about coaching & sport in and around the state of Texas. You should check out his “Team Player” podcast if you are a fan of both. James knows his stuff and keeps things moving along at a brisk and fun pace.
But you should also listen if your sports fandom extends to more than just traditional sports like football. This week, James interviews Coach Pat Abernathey, who recently led his Boulder FC rugby team to a state championship in Colorado. If you want to learn more about the historic sport of rugby and where it is headed in America (The U.S. will host the 2032 Rugby World Cup!), give it a listen.
Coach Abernathey’s general sports knowledge is very “Roo Tale-ish,” so you’ll also enjoy references to figures in Texas sport that stretch back 50 years. Hey, this ain’t my first rodeo; I know stuff about Texas sports history. But I still spent a lot of the episode googling the names being dropped.
If you are reading this, then you probably have an interest in AC athletics. You’ll also learn a bit about Roo baseball in the 1990s, Coach David Norman, and what makes AC a special place compared to factories like A&M & UT or even similar sized schools. In short, it’s the relationships. OK, you already knew that one.
But at the very least if for no other reason, tune in to learn what gave heavy sleeper Marc nightmares in Luckett back in 1992, exacerbated by the terror of his roommate Coach Abernathey entering and exiting at all hours of the night.

Excellent interview James! It was absolutely NOT AT ALL very “marc_parrish.”
