“Untold Stories” are the Roo Tales yet to be written for a second book after the first book is finished and published. Hope you enjoy these untold story previews.
Here’s one:
Bryce Gertrude Frank & I have two Austin College things in common. We both drained a few hoops at Hughey Gym, and we both applied for the Peace Corps. I’ll admit, however, that she scored a few more buckets than me. And, she was actually accepted to the Peace Corps. My application fell short; apparently Tegucigalpa had little interest in 1992 accepting someone who wanted to tell “Cuentos de los Canguros.”
There are few Roo Tales about women. We all know why. Women’s athletics is a recent development, a product of Title IX in the 1970s. Still, I go looking for them wherever I can find them. I don’t recall who said it, but someone online referred to Frank as the “greatest female athlete in AC history.” Who am I to argue? Frank holds numerous AC scoring and rebounding records, secured pretty much every conference award imaginable, and earned 2nd team All-American honors in 2019. Frank was the only Texan on the top four All-American squads; she certainly qualifies for a story.
Austin College is famous for its International Studies programs. There’s nothing more AC than opportunities like the Peace Corps. Unfortunately, the Coronavirus pandemic has forced the U.S. government to recall all Peace Corps Volunteers (PCV) back to the States. Even worse, their positions have been terminated, with insufficient health and employment benefits comparable to other public servants. But you can help. Sign the petition in the comments below to help Frank and other PCVs who, until recently, were assisting political and economic development abroad and furthering the best ideals of America.
There’s plenty of time to tell a Frank / ACWBB circa 2019; we’ll definitely get to it one of these days. It’ll be another great “untold story” for another day. In the meantime though, safe travels getting back home Bryce Frank. Good luck in your transition from the Peace Corps. Thanks for representing the best of America and the best of Austin College.
