Nebraska Wesleyan, the Odoms, & the Parrishes

AC Freshman Jordan Odom will probably attend Saturday night’s Roo football opener and cheer a Roo touchdown pass. The Kangaroos host Nebraska Wesleyan University at Jerry Apple Stadium in the first night game ever played on campus. Jordan Odom is the son of Brian Odom, a member of my AC fraternity, and Shelley Odom, a fraternity little sister.

Jordan just recently left home for college. Our son Alex also just recently left home for college. Shelley & Brian are probably experiencing what Dianne & I are feeling: a combination of pride and sorrow. Jordan and Alex, on the other hand, are probably feeling a lot of freedom from the ties of family.

I was initially planning to assist Kirk Hughes with the call of the Nebraska Wesleyan game in Sherman, but my plans changed. Dianne & I will instead be visiting and checking in on Alex. Hey Kirk knows. So do Shelley & Brian. Family comes first, and your kids are never truly free from the ties of family.

Jordan, enjoy the Nebraska Wesleyan game. And enjoy your newly found freedom. But there are some things you should know.

You should know that AC has played Nebraska Wesleyan before. AC met Nebraska Wesleyan 30 years ago in 1993.

You should know that AC has played Nebraska Wesleyan under the lights before. That night game was at Sherman’s Bearcat stadium in 1993.

You should know that AC fans cheered a Roo touchdown pass in that game. That TD pass was a 66-yarder to Hall of Honor inductee Barrett Jenkins.

You should know who threw that TD pass in Sherman under the lights against Nebraska Wesleyan. It was your dad, Brian Odom.

And most of all, you should know that you are never truly free from the ties of family. Especially an AC family.
