There’s an
incredible soccer player in that photo. Accolades, honors, records?
Yup, she won ’em. She’s being honored this summer for those legendary
accomplishment. What a pic!
Oh yeah, Abby Wambach is in it as well. I hear she’s pretty good too.
Gather ‘round little children, and listen to the story of an Oklahoma football legend.
Oh, you’ve probably already looked at the photo I just shared. So, you know who I’m talking about.
In the 1980s, this guy was THE MAN in the Sooner State. I bet you
remember. He played his ball in that football crazy town just south of
Oklahoma City, the one that claims nearly 15 championships since the Bud
Wilkinson days. The road to a title in Oklahoma often goes through
Stillwater; this dude led his squad to a victory at OSU’s T. Boone
Pickens Stadium on the way to yet another championship.
Records
at his college alma mater? Yeah, he owns them. And awards too. Most
outstanding football player. First team All-Conference. How he didn’t
earn All-American at career’s end is still one of those unsolved
mysteries near the Red River. But talk to anyone who was around to
watch him 30 years ago, and they’ll all say the same thing. Playmaker.
Yeah, Oklahoma’s Jason Johnson was something else on the gridiron.
Here’s Jason at a convention with a fella named “Brian.” Some fan I
assume. Apparently “Brian” played football in Oklahoma too. I dunno.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Anyways……
Austin College has been playing
football since the fall of Rome. Over that time, no Roo found the end
zone more than Johnson. 32 of his 34 career touchdowns came over the
three-year period (89-91) when he was a starter or regular contributor;
those 32 touchdowns took place over only 31 games.
You hear what I’m saying? 32 TDs in 31 games?
Jason was the rare back who could find the end zone on any given
Saturday and STILL see his average TDs per game go DOWN. Power up the
middle? Yup. Speed around the corner? That too. Johnson was often a
linebacker’s nightmare, sometimes resembling a TIAA small college
version of Bo Jackson. This “Brian” guy in the photo maybe knows a
thing or two about that.
And just your luck. Johnson is being
honored this weekend in Sherman. He’s being inducted into the Austin
College Hall of Honor. Well, duh, says any Roo my age. Brian Bosworth
was also recently inducted into the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame.
Again……well, duh people.
Now’s your chance to head back to
Legends, recall simpler times, and shake Jason’s hand. Well done
doubles partner. Looking forward to toasting with Lisa, and filling Mr. J.’s head with tall tales. Dianne wishes she could be there.
(1) Catch up on the softball stories of the daughters of Kevin Krause (’92), Austin College Hall of Honor inductee.
(2) Chat about All-Conference Kevin Krause’s role in the 20+ win 1991 season back which revitalized AC baseball.
(3) Listen to the tales of Kevin’s dad Ken Krause (AC ‘63(?)), who played football with Bo Miller at the birth of Calder Stadium.
(4) Ask a bit about grandfather Arthur Krause, who kept his 1932 Game #3 ticket stub of the Cubs-Yankees World Series when Ruth famously called his shot.
(5) Learn just what the heck Jebediah Krause was doing in the 19th century cause with this family you know it was something!
See you soon Kevin. Wish we could head back to 3rd floor Luckett.
I think I got around to just about everything this weekend in Sherman.
Got to chat with AC Legends from 1960s, and meet some new Legends from the 2010s.
Celebrated
two Roo friends from my graduation year of 1992 going in, and was able
to catch up or meet meaningful family and friends in their lives.
Did some planning and scheming with some College Station Roos who are Brazos Valley Legends themselves.
Also made good progress on my goal to meet every member of the 1981 AC
National Championship team. Jeff Robbins, a 2019 Hall inductee, was on
that team. And y’all know I love the kick.
That 57-yard
crossbar hitting championship winning field goal is so legendary, I
entertain thoughts of one day writing a screenplay. Yes it would be a
great movie.
I thought I’d pay tribute on my way out of town by
trying to replicate Branum’s effort. Same spot, same distance, same
direction. Not quite the same result. 🙂.
But I’ll be working out in the off season. Next year’s the year.
