Barney, Baby Bop & Austin College

Today’s big news brings us the return of Barney the Purple Dinosaur, the PBS children’s character born in 1992 who raised a generation of Millennial Roos.

Barney received blowback from older Generation X Roos like me, probably due in part to the demands of parenting. Still, that’s not nice.

Oddly enough though, I’m sympathetic to that blowback for Roo reasons. For the voice of Barney comes from Bob West, a Class of ’78 graduate of AC-rival Trinity University.

However, I will not STAND for any negativity towards the show “Barney & Friends.” For the voice of Barney’s friend “Baby Bop” comes the fabulous Austin College Kangaroo Julie Johnson.

I was fortunate to see Julie play the role of Beulah in the musical “Come From Away.” Run, do not walk, to a performance near you. Marc highly recommends.

But today I learned that Julie also had a small role in “Pure Country,” the George Strait movie that came out in 1992………the year of Barney’s birth and the year of my AC graduation. Now that’s neat.

This likely won’t be the last words I have to say about the awesome Julie Johnson. But it will probably be the last post about Barney from this old 1992 AC dinosaur. Pinky promise, and “I Cross My heart.”
