Marc, Birthday, and Legends 2025

It’s April 29th! My birthday. How touching for Austin College to share this Legends 2025 reminder on my special day. 😂 But Legends 2025 is not about me. I mean, look at all those heavy hitters in this Austin College lineup:

Walker Fenci (’90) was an Academic All-American and 1st team All-Conference defensive back. I associate Walker with one of my favorite AC football moments against Tarleton in 1988. Come to Legends and I’ll tell the story.

Bryce Frank (’19) is simply Ms. AC Basketball. A multi-year NCAA All-American, Frank made it easy for me to become a big Roo women’s basketball fan. Not surprisingly, Bryce made it into a few Marc Roo Tales.

Barry Holcomb (’92) was an NAIA All-American swimmer for Coach Sig Lawson. How do I know all this stuff? Well, Barry Holcomb was also my AC fraternity pledge brother. He was easily worthy of a nomination. So, I nominated him.

Anthony Patrick (’87) was, like Walker Fenci, a 1st team All-Conference defensive back for AC football. Many of my fraternity actives played on the defensive side of the ball alongside Anthony, whom I got to meet at Legends 2024 after one of my actives introduced me.

Jon Stein (’00) took his All-American tennis playing days to the coaching world at McKinney North HS, where he has mentored state champions. Tennis is the sport of a lifetime, so Jon & I are still a formidable doubles team despite a combined age over 100. 😂

Carl Iwasaki (Honorary) passed unexpectedly in 2024. He was an outstanding baseball coach for AC, with one huge feather in his cap: Coach Iwasaki led AC baseball to a 2007 SCAC conference championship. That 2007 title should be a Roo Tale.

Brian McKamy (’78) is more than just an outstanding coach deserving of the Joe Spencer Award. He’s also a regular at Claude Webb Jr.’s Gar Hole, where I’ve enjoyed a few chats with McKamy about his coaching past. This summer we may chat about the 1976 softball team.

And yes, I’ll be a part of the weekend too. Consider this my personal invitation to you to join us. I’d love to put faces with your names. Friday night is a fun reception at the Gar Hole; Saturday night is the main event on campus. More information in the comments.

Hope to see you at Legends 2025. There, I can tell you more stories about these fine inductees mentioned above. And you can tell me some of yours. For Marc, more Roo conversation this summer sounds like the best birthday present of all.
